Joint Action Committee
Mae Sot, Thailand
27th May 2009
Hon. Mr. Ban Ki-moon
Secretary-General
United Nations
Re: Role of United Nations for the release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners, for the purpose of national reconciliation and democratization of Burma.
Your Excellency,
The Joint Action Committee is a collective group of political activists who have been exiled to Mae Sot due to our activities in Burma . We believe that Mae Sot is an important place to hold rallies and send powerful messages of hope, to the people of Burma . Dedicated to democracy we have all given up our country and lives, fighting to free Burma .
We have learned from the media that Your Excellency is planning to visit Burma as soon as possible. Therefore, we send this letter to express our position on the situation in Burma and our expectations from your visit.
Today marks the legal date that our democratic leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is due for release from house arrest. However, as she remains in a “special” cell, in the notorious Insein prison, her freedom is an increasingly unrealistic dream for us.
The trial moves into its seventh day and Daw Aung Aung San Kyi continues to maintain her innocence, suggesting the SPDC is at fault for not providing an adequate level of security. The trial has widely been criticized for being a complete scam; in an attempt to cripple her legal advisory team, the SPDC revoked the license of Daw Aung Suu Kyi’s lawyer in the midst of preparing the defense. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has not been allowed enough lawyers for the case and time for her defense. Apart from a group of handpicked journalists the court has remained closed leaving little room for scrutiny.
All of the SPDC actions so far, indicate that the result of this trial has already been scripted. With the elections around the corner, the Generals appear to be terrified that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi will ruin their chances of legitimizing the power they hold. Whether they were behind the intrusion or not, they will be making sure that they use this trial to eliminate any threat that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has to their grip on power.
As our leader stands in court today, we have come here to show our solidarity with her. Not only do we show our support for her but we stand outside the United Nations Human Rights Commission office as a show of our support for you and your planned visit to Burma .
The Burmese SPDC has had countless opportunities to prove to the world that they are dedicated to freedom and democratization. Every time the SPDC has shown no signs of backing down in the face of international outcry. The release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is yet another opportunity that the Generals are likely to miss – but this time we can’t allow this to happen. By allowing them to once again show an upright disrespect for basic democratic rights, we are condemning the people of Burma to decades of more oppression.
We welcome your concern and interest in our country but urge that you put unprecedented pressure on the Generals to release Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is essential for national reconciliation; all ethnic leaders have acknowledged that without her, reconciliation cannot be realized.
We encourage you to give the Generals an ultimatum for the release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners in a certain time period. By the end of the set time period, if they have not carried out the demands set out to them by the United Nations then a binding solution at the United Nations Security Council must be organized, for an international arms embargo to be placed on Burma .
Having set the ultimatum, we urge you to secure the immediate provision of necessary medical treatment to all political prisoners. And all prisoners isolated far from their families are to be brought to prisons close to their homes in order to immediately put an end to psychological torture.
The members of The Joint Action Committee, political activists, foreign volunteers and local migrants have all come here today to show their gratitude for your support. It is our dream to fix the problems of Burma by ourselves, but every time we try we are brutally tortured, imprisoned or murdered.
Today, we ask for your help and urge you to take a stance, so tough, that it will give the Generals no choice but to release our leader, and begin the process of true democratization.
Sincerely yours,
Joint Action Committee

ANNOUNCEMENT OF JOINT ACTION COMMITTEE (MAE SOT)
Date -May 27, 2009
On 24 May we made a demonstration at the Thai-Burma Friendship Bridge and Today in order to protest against the unfair trial of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. Our aim was to show our solidarity with our true leader and all political prisoners inside Burma. We wanted to send a powerful message to the people of Burma that we will continue to fight for democracy and that there is still hope. Mae Sot is a very important place for Burma so it’s important that we speak out as much as we can. Being so close to Burma, we have the highest chance of being heard!
We did not intend to disturb or offend the Thai government and people. We express our deep gratitude to the Thai people for their support and kindness. Also, we thank the Thai government for their recent statement on the May 19 that respectively expressed concern about the recent events inside Burma.
Now our democratically elected leader, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is facing trumped up charges for an intrusion into her home. She faces the seventh day of an unjustified trial set by the State Peace and Development council. If she loses the case she may be put in prison for another 5 years. This is an extremely dangerous situation. Without Daw Aung San Suu Kyi we will not be able to get a true and fair democracy for the people of Burma.
The problem of Burma has changed from being one of national importance to that of international importance. In an increasingly globalised world, one country’s actions increasingly affect another’s. If the General’s don’t respect human and democratic rights then they are also not respecting every country that does try to stand up for what is right. We need all of the international community to come together and think of new initiatives to save the people of Burma from decades of oppression.
China, Russia and India are essential for encouraging the democratization of Burma and we urge that they feel the pain of the Burmese people and help us!
We will not stop fighting until our leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is free!!!!!!
